I love parenting books. I know not all moms do, but I just feel like I need all the help I can get. They are interesting to me. Some I disagree with, some I never finish, and some I wish were permanently embedded in my brain, and I could recall their wisdom at a moment's notice. Just got this one in the mail:
I'm on page 6, but I can tell it's a good one. And it's already addressing what I could have done better when Jansen came home in tears the other day because he didn't gather as many "fire beans." It recommends making him eat them. (just kidding.)
Sometimes I feel like time is slipping through my fingers...the time I have to show my children how much I love them, the time I need to build a relationship that will last (and thrive) through their teens, to prepare them for when they are on their own in the world. When they have children of their own what will they remember about my mothering? What will I have done right? What will they decide to do differently?
I'm liking this quote:
"If we take care of the moments, the years will take care of themselves."
-Maria Edgeworth, Irish author
Isn't that awesome? The truth in it just rings in my ears. Applies to my relationship with Nate as well. Actually, it has endless applications. My physical health, spiritual growth, all family relationships...I'm going to remember this one.

I love parenting books too! I also read ones I disagree with or on opposite ends of the spectrum (the bad news is, you're always doing something wrong according to someone ;). I read this one last year and loved it (as well as Siblings without rivalry- by the same authors) . .. in fact I just reserved it again from the library yesterday. I need a refresher!
I'm taking a parenting class right now and I love it and I think of you almost every week when I go...I think you would love it and I really need someone to talk about it with, so I'll see ya next Thursday at the nampa institute bldg!
I read the original version of this book "How To Teach So Kids Will Learn" in grad school and it's great. Some of it seems like total common sense, but it's got great perspective!
You and Kara both know I don't like parenting books. Or lists. I'm in trouble aren't I? I'm going to have hooligan children that have no milk because I didn't make a list and didn't get it at the store. Gosh dang it you people and your constant self-improvement making me feel all guilty! Well at least you are two of my best friends and I can just follow your examples. You definitely set a good example.
Great stuff. You inspire me.
I started reading that book and really liking it and then it was due at the library again. I think it's got some pretty good advice and is pretty normal sounding. Some are just weird though.
Are you trying to make me cry? Seriously, girl. I have felt time slipping away faster especially now that my newborn is 4 MONTHS OLD! AHH! I have the same thoughts all the time as you, but mine are more like: I don't want to be "that" crazy mom whose child consistently complains about me to the roommates during college. There was always one roommate who had a wacky mom and a perfect dad. Thanks for your insight. I needed it.
